Madam - Short Story Written By Richard Jr Ocaya
‘Okay abantwana bam,’ madam said to the munchkin class, ‘what is one plus one?’
‘Me,’ little Themba raised his hand.
‘Me,’ little Karabelo raised her hand.
‘Yes you,’ madam pointed.
She stood up, ‘Two,’ little Karabelo answered.
‘Very good mtanami. Here is a sweetie.’
Madam gives little Karabelo the sweet.
‘Thank you, ma’am.’
‘Okay,’ madam said, ‘What is two plus two.’
‘Me,’ little Themba said.
‘Me,’ little Karabelo said.
Madam peeks at little Karabelo and peaks away with a
smile.
‘Me,’ little Bokang said with a big smile.
‘Yes, Bokang.’
Little Bokang stood, ‘Four.’
‘Very good mtanami,’ madam said ecstatically, ‘here is
a sweetie.’
Madam hands little Bokang a sweetie.
‘Thank you, ma’am.’
Madam erects her posture, ‘What is four plus four?’
‘Me,’ little Bokang raised her hand.
‘Me,’ second to little Bokang little Themba raised his
hands so hard he knocked his table over dropping all its contents on the ground.
‘Wena ka hloho e mpe e ntsho. Vokof mahn! Argh sies
mahn.’
The class laughed at little Themba as he picked up his
dozen Monami’s, tucked in his shirt and picked his table up. Near tears, he
almost let out a cry.
‘Ai vokof wena o se ke wa leka ho re llela. Banna ba maZulu
nx mahn!’ she continued, ‘Yebo ngwa-mtanami Bokang.’
'You can't even speak Zulu,' Themba thinks to himself.
‘Four plus four it’s seven.'
‘Ah, the answer is eight,’ madam said and took
a sweetie out, ‘Here is a sweetie, I won’t give you next time if you get it
wrong.’
Little Bokang received the sweetie shyly, ‘Thanks you,
mama.’
'That one even butchers English.'
